NEXT: port the FreeBSD netstack
I need volunteers for this huge task. And I don't have much time left for coding, anyway.

Just noticed that VI did not like my copy-pasted commit log. It should be: we _need_ better pthread/mutex support. Here is the important part, again:
Cleaned up native part of libbind.so a little bit more. Though, the ugly hack remains. We need better pthread/mutex support. Added TODO that we also should move sysctl() into the kernel and libroot.so.

Committed libnetwork.so. I actually wanted to port BSD's libc/net resolver, but that one uses too many unsupported functions, so I basically merged libbind.so and libsocket.so into one library.
Moved the libbind.so sources to libnetwork/dns.
Cleaned up native part of libbind.so a little bit more. Though, the ugly hack remains. We nbetter pthread/mutex support. Added TODO that we also shousctl() into the kernel and libroot.so.
Improved DEVNOTES a little bit.

Moved some headers around and cleaned them up.
Fixed threading code in libbind.so. Don't know why I hadn't noticed this before. Now it is reliable, but uses an even uglier hack.
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/haiku/trunk@15585 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Question about libbind: Why do I have to specify libroot.so in LinkAgainst? And does SharedLibrary not set the dependencies? I had to add Depends libbind.so : ... ;. Ingo, anyone?
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/haiku/trunk@15192 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
TODO: move all public networking headers to some other place (compat or headers/legacy?) and replace the current headers with clean versions from FreeBSD and BIND 9.3.1
TODO: remove R5 target support
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/haiku/trunk@15169 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
it for us, but seems that we had a lock/memory-leak, here).
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/haiku/trunk@14411 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
- removed profiles, ppp_up, and some TODOs
- simplified KPPPReportManager and reports API, KPPPInterface::Up()+Down(), and PPPInterfaceListener (also removed some features from the last one)
- KPPPInterface now sends the last PPP_CONNECTION_REPORT message to every newly registered report receiver
- added net_server to the build, but removed old net_server testing-stuff
all changes are completely untested
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/haiku/trunk@14338 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Interface statistics are now maintained.
If I did not forget anything the core stack is now feature-complete.
Only ppp_up must be finished, bugs and hacks found, and modem support added; that's it for R1, I hope.
Everyting untested!
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@10541 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Moved ppp_up code to KPPPManager.
Experimenting with IPCP DialOnDemand support.
Many changes I do not remember.
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@10117 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
All ppp_up instances are now maintained by KPPPManager.

Added missing uname() function which is needed for full R5 compatibility.
It seems that nearly all apps are working now. I could finally run Vision (BONE and R5), BeShare (quick test only), lynx, Net+, etc.
Apps that don't work: Mozilla for BONE, some ssh binary that I downloaded, Be's ftp when not in passive mode.
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@9098 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Explanation: we did not have the same sockaddr_in struct size as BONE, but our netstack wants to have our size, so I changed it to match BONE's. ;)
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@9079 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
adding a Deskbar replicant when a connection is established.
It is not finished. The Deskbar replicant is not even started...hopefully, R1 will not be released before 2005
. ;)

There are linker warnings, but this is only due to the linker linking against the BeOS libs instead of our libs.

UDP did not set AF_INET in the sockaddr that is passed to recvfrom().

BONE_VERSION=1 jam
This will remove the select() function from libsocket.so.
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7202 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Also updated our socket.h to be more compatible with BONE (we do not support SO_NONBLOCK which is needed for Mozilla).
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7201 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Later we may decide to replace it with the libbind.so code.
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7200 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
But I would not consider it stable.
Not tested on R5 net_server, only BONE (replaced BONE stack)!
Not compatible to BONE applications (you must use net_server apps or OBOS apps)!
Removed debug output from compat.c.
Fixed DNS bug (well, it's very hacky).
NOTE FOR BONE USERS: Uncomment the definition of BONE_VERSION in select.c!

BTW, this is the first checkin with our own netstack and ppp implementation!
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7183 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
* PPP stack: Fixed a bug that was introduced with the settings_tools change.
* Modem: Renamed "Interface" to "Port" and made it use any device (i.e.: a complete path must be supplied) and made it assume that the device is a port (termios.h API).
* Fixed a compilation warning.
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7167 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Changed some constants to match our style-guidelines.
Extended settings_tools to support modifying driver_settings/parameter structures (used by DialUpPreflet).
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7157 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
So here is the new version with much simpler dialogs.
The "Protocols" section is removed and all protocols add their own section. Protocols are now added/removed by changing the state of "Enabled" (a checkbox) in their section.
IPCP is named "TCP/IP", so everybody should know what can be found there.
All optional fields are marked as such ("(Optional)" to the right of each field).
Some labels were renamed (Dial -> Connect, etc.).
Added possibility to build a german version (I will ask some people around here if they find it easy to use).
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7156 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
Some changes to the UI.
This preflet should finally be usable and support the most important features (devices, authenticators, protocols). Currently, there is only support for PPPoE, PAP, and IPCP.
git-svn-id: file:///srv/svn/repos/haiku/trunk/current@7131 a95241bf-73f2-0310-859d-f6bbb57e9c96
* Added TextRequestDialog (only asynchronous version because it is easier and the preflet should not block [it gets update messages from the kernel]).
* PPPoE: We now read the available interfaces from the kernel module, so the user does not have to know the exact name of the interface he wants to use. It can be chosen from a BMenuField. You can also enter any interface name if you select "Other: " from the menu.
* Small changes (e.g.: call MakeFocus(), etc.).
